Call for Papers - IATUL Conference 2013

Don't miss the deadline! 1 October 2012
The 2013 IATUL Conference will be held in Cape Town, South Africa from 14 - 18 April. The theme is "Doing it together: effective collaboration."
Papers and posters that will aid in sharing experiences and understanding of the effectiveness of collaboration in the following areas are welcome:
  • E-learning and beyond: transliteracy, blended learning, game based learning and academic social networks
  • E-science: local strategies and beyond – including research data management in libraries
  • Cloud computing: impact on library services and collaborative ventures, use and benefits for libraries, support for research, etc.
  • Libraries as collaborative hubs: for students and faculty, library and general academic support services
  • Inner university collaboration: library and faculty, library and student body, library support services, library building/refurbishment planning structures and marketing of library services
  • Library and their business partners: electronic data exchange, consortia, and more
  • Inter Library networking: national, regional and international library collaborative ventures Conference Papers

2012 ECAR Study of Analytics in Higher Education

The objectives of this research were to assess the current state of analytics in higher education, outline the challenges and barriers to using analytics, and develop a maturity index to provide a common means of assessing progress in analytics.

Aligning National Approaches to Digital Preservation - Educopia Institute: 2012

On May 23-25, more than 125 delegates from more than 20 countries gathered in Tallinn, Estonia, for the "Aligning National Approaches to Digital Preservation" conference. At the National Library of Estonia, this group explored how to create and sustain international collaborations to support the preservation of our digital cultural memory. This publication contains a collection of peer-reviewed essays that were developed by conference panels and attendees in the months following ANADP. Rather than simply chronicling the event, the volume intends to broaden and deepen its impact by reflecting on the ANADP presentations and conversations and establishing a set of starting points for building a greater alignment across digital preservation initiatives. Above all, it highlights the need for strategic international collaborations to support the preservation of our collective cultural memory.

Walk-in Access to e-Resources at the University of Bath

 Although the move from print to electronic journals over the last two decades has been enormously beneficial to academic libraries and their users, the shift from owning material outright to renting access has restricted the autonomy of librarians to grant access to these journals.

De-Mystifying the Data Management Requirements of Research Funders

Research libraries have sought to apply their information management expertise to the management of digital research data. This focus has been spurred in part by the policies of two major funding agencies in the United States, which require grant recipients make research outputs, including publications and research data, openly available. As many academic libraries are beginning to offer or are already offering assistance in writing and implementing data management plans, it is important to consider how best to support researchers. Our research examined the current data management requirements of major US funding agencies to better understand data management requirements facing researchers and the implications for libraries offering data management services for researchers.

Yes, MOOC is the global higher education game changer

Free Massive Open Online Courseware – MOOC – is less than a year old but it is already clear this will be the game changer in higher education worldwide. Right now it is reverberating through the world’s universities like a tectonic shock.

The new paradigm, first developed in the northern autumn of 2011 by Sebastian Thrun and Peter Norvig at Stanford University alongside Silicon Valley in California, will be as disruptive to conventional delivery in higher education as the internet is proving in terms of disrupting book publishers, newspapers, and stores such as Myer and David Jones.

Print Management at "Mega-scale": a Regional Perspective on Print Book Collections in North America

CLIR/DLF Report Highlights Need for Data Curation Education

Data curation is a growing challenge for research and scholarship, but few researchers are prepared to deal with the challenge, according to a new report from CLIR and the Digital Library Federation. The report, The Problem of Data, examines data management and curation practices among university researchers and the current state of data curation education.
