IATUL International Research and Study Programme

Each year the International Association of University Libraries

offers a grant of up to € 4,000 to staff from member libraries to investigate and provide outcomes on current issues of importance to IATUL members. 

Applications may be made by any staff member at an IATUL member library with the support of their University Librarian/Director. Only one application for a grant can be accepted from any IATUL member in each calendar year. Applications for the following year are accepted from 1 June until 30 September. 

 

Criteria

The criteria for selecting the successful applications are:

  • The potential of the investigation/research described in the application to further the goals of IATUL with preference given to applications that appear likely to promote real outcomes and innovative solutions
  • The demonstrated ability of the applicant to complete the nominated investigation
  • The support from the applicant’s University Librarian/Director and, where necessary, funding to cover any additional costs of the study programme
  • Applications will be strengthened if from international partner IATUL members with common outcomes
Conditions

Applications for the IATUL International Research and Study Programme are made on the application form in accordance with the following conditions:

  • The application must set out the purpose of the research/study and the demonstrated need for such
  • The application must set out the benefits and outcomes that will be derived from the research/study
  • A project schedule, budget and letter of support from the University Librarian/Director must be supplied
  • Applications must include a communication/dissemination strategy that outlines how the findings of the research/study will be disseminated, including reporting findings to the IATUL membership through presenting at an IATUL conference as well as other methods such as reports, blog etc.
  • Applications must include what other outcomes will be produced and how they will benefit the wider IATUL membership
  • The IATUL Board appoints a selection panel of Board members which determines the successful applicants
  • The IATUL Board determines the amount of the grant with an upper limit of € 4,000 on the recommendation of the selection panel
  • Within three months of the conclusion of the research/study, the grant holder(s) must submit to the IATUL Office a brief report on the conduct and outcomes of the grant, which will include plans and timelines for the production of other outcomes
  • The research/study must be concluded one year after the project is officially approved by the IATUL Board of Directors
  • Extension of the research/study from the submitted project schedule can only occur in extenuating circumstances. Application for extension must be made at least one month before a scheduled deliverable is due and should include a statement of why the extension is necessary and a proposed amended project schedule
  • The grant holder(s) is/are encouraged to publish the findings in the professional literature and in their institutional repository, and they may submit (or be invited to submit) a presentation for an IATUL conference or other event
  • Successful applicant will support and contribute to the promotion and publicity of the IATUL Research and Study Grant Programme, as identified by the IATUL Board

Grant receiver 2024: Vicky Grant

The selection panel for the IATUL International Research and Study Programme 2024 has decided to support Vicky Grant from the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom, and her project "Beyond the shelves: establishing a podcast for the International Association of University Libraries (IATUL)"
During her project in the period from Dec 2023 to Nov 2024, Vicky will stay at the American University of Sharjah Library, UAE, as a visiting researcher.

The next application period will start in summer 2024 for the year 2025.
